Out and at em again 17/07/2014

Managed to launch at midday today after being at work since 3am, Thought I would get a bit of fishing in before the weather gap closed putting the Pollack out of bounds for a while

Found the Pollack straight away with constant action from 2-3lb fish with a few smaller ones too had the usual couple of lunkers but not losing them due to kelp or hook pulls just braid sheared off on the rock ledges
I did however net one fish that was probably a PB just but managed to leap off my deck leaving the trebles in the net before I could get a pic
A few snaps of some of the smaller fish

As the tide was starting to turn the wind picked up making conditions tricky so headed back in picking my way between the exposed kelp ledges had a hunting Razorbill for company for a while too

No wonder the bigger fish take some getting out when they have this for cover

A quick trip between the school runs 14/07/2014

With a fairly good forecast I managed to get to the launch for 9am after dropping the kids at school. Big tide today so a long trolley to the water and a bit of a stiff offshore breeze meant the paddle out was brisk on arriving at my usual spot I cast the lure out put the rod in the holder and only got about 2-3 paddle strokes in and the rod hooped over fish on and a fine pollack of around 2-3lb on board this carried on all morning interspersed with a large amount of Mackerel hitting the plugs too

I had the usual happen 3 times today hooking into really good fish one kelping me after a long scrap and just getting my plug back and the other two just down to hook pulls unbelievable but thats fishing
Managed to land a lot around the 4lb mark and took a 4lb 7oz fish home for the table along with a smaller one that had damage to its eye from the lure but released over twenty fish and able to shake a few Mackerel off the hooks too

Managed this pic of a Lion's Mane Jellyfish

I needed to get back in plenty of time to pick the kids up from school so decided on trolling back in the long way as the tide had dropped so not a straightforward paddle back so set off and had to reel the rod in because the fish were hammering it all the way making progress impossible passed the wreck on the way in and battled back against a headwind all the way

Not a bad little session

Young Jacks day out at the Runswick Kayak match 05/07/2014

As part of the organising committee I was praying for some fine weather for the match but also as I had plans to unleash Jack amongst the seasoned blokes, at 8 years old now I reckoned he was upto the job but we had a massive turnout of around 80 anglers

Even the big named competitors couldn't phase young Jack lol

The weather wasn't Ideal and at times closer to shore we had some impressive walls of water bearing down on us so our attempts at getting a flatty for the heaviest flatfish went out of the window we up anchored and set our sights higher trolling diving plugs once out past the odd breaking swell (one right over us both) Jack started to nail the small Coalies before latching into something heavy which he struggled to get upto the surface I had to help by grabbing the braid but managed to bump it off as it dived for cover

Then Jacks rod pulled around as we coasted down the face of a swell and he was attached to a decent fish at least something to weigh in as he got it up to the surface I could see it was a lovely red kelp Cod around the 4lb mark and as I lifted it on board Jack was delighted his first Cod on a plug too only to hear the heart sinking sound of it splash back in as I was unhooking it to say I was gutted was an understatement I braced for a sulking and bad mood episode but Jacks response was lets get another one Dad.
So the next hour I paddled him round and round the likely looking areas skimming the kelp and rocks we were rewarded with a couple more Cod and a lovely Pollack a few PB's for him the Pollack he was convinced had got off but as soon as it saw the kayak it dived for the kelp rod hooped and clutch singing Jack did well hanging on but I made sure these ended up in the hatch safely

Just as we were on a good patch of ground I had a message over the VHF from Snapper stating he was bored of this cod fishing and how were we getting on he soon decided to join us and was rewarded with a small Coalie first drop and lost a biggie soon after

Good to meet you Snapper after many conversations on forums and facebook at last a bit of fishing together
At the weigh in Jacks Cod was his heaviest fish going 3lb 10oz putting him in 9th place and £40 better off (this changed to 11th place as there was a slight mistake with some other peoples weights)
but what an achievement for an 8 year old in testing conditions at times for him

A great turnout and a big well done to all who took part

A Fine evening on the Pollack 7/7/2014

I met up with Mark last night for a session trolling for Pollack the forecasted wind was 5mph but I knew all day it was much stronger and my fears were correct as we faced out to see short steep chop some breaking swells and white caps as far as you could see but we were here now and hopes were high
As we paddled out we were hit side on a few times in the shallower water but on asking Mark if he was happy heading out further he gave the nod and I knew he was going to up his PB Pollack if we could reach the right area
Almost as soon as we were on the grounds my rod hooped over and Pollack No1 was on board a fine looking fish

Then Mark was into one before I had returned mine a new PB

and this continued all night paddling no more than 2-3mins before being hit often when I was most dreading it side on to breaking water but all great sport and the sea and wind had dropped to nothing for the last few hours with Mark upping his PB a few more times

I too got a new PB at 8lb 1oz along with around 40-45 more averaging 3-4lb keeping 4 for the table but releasing the rest to fight another day

I saw Mark into a good fish but he had it on board in no time so didnt give it much thought until I trolled past him unhooking it what a beast a new PB and a double weighed on the beach later at 11lb 1oz chuffed to bits for him what a fish

one happy boy

I had a fish hatch with 4 really nice Pollack in it and should have been over the moon with it but towards the end of the session I lost two really good fish to the kelp one of which I dont want to even imagine its weight so was left feeling absolutely wounded
But theres always next time
