Stealth Supalite X 1st outing

I picked up my new Kayak this week it’s a Stealth Supalite X which is looking like it will be great for when the surf kicks up a bit still lots of rigging to be done and a proper review once I have managed to get out a few times and tested it out a bit more.

But initial thoughts are very good massive fish hatch and plenty of other storage excellent riding the waves in still need to figure out if I can move the footrests to make it fit a bit better and managed plenty of self rescues even in the deepwater surf without any problems.

Some pics for now

Back in search of Pollock 04/10/2012

Today I headed back out for a session trolling for Pollock around the scaur edges but a combination of big seas and a lot of rain the previous week meant the water was still coloured making the lure fishing slow, after a good paddle about I got a take which failed to hook up but at least I knew something could spot the lures in the coloured conditions.

With only a few small taps over the next hour I was surprised when the rod whacked around and line started to peel off the reel at first I thought I had snagged bottom but when the drag started screaming a lot faster than I was moving it was obvious it was a fish heading for the Kelp after struggling to get the rod out of the holder for a while I leaned into the fish but it was well and truly “Kelped” but after reeeling myself towards it and putting pressuere on from directly above I soon had a nice Pollock in the net

Unfortunately that was the only action of the day so landed on an exposed scaur for a rest and managed a few snaps of the local wildlife was good seeing good numbers of Eider ducks amongst the Oystercatchers and Shag’s

A quick paddle after work 08/09/2012

I managed to get out for a quick session after work today with the plan being take a rod to troll lures until the tide dropped enough to take some pics of the wildlife on the exposed rocks at low water so I packed my DSLR in TWO! drybags and paddled out, I missed a good take almost immediately and then shortly afterwards I was into my first fish a nice sized Coalie.

This was followed by a Mackerel and then I managed a couple of Pollock the biggest weighing 4lb 8oz good fun fishing with light spinning rods made even more fun because the anti reverse on my reel packed in after the first Coalie so had to wedge the handle with my foot whilst paddling to stop the reel back winding!

Unfortunately todays small tides meant that the rocks were barely exposed at low water so no seals hauled out today but a few Cormorants Eider ducks and waders were about but the rocks were only just knocking the power of the swells so it was a case of getting in position and un dry bagging the camera before I was turned side on to the breakers by the wind scary with an expensive non waterproof camera but I managed these few shots

Super conditions but slow fishing amongst the seals 02/09/2012

I had a trip back out in search of Pollock today managed a few on plugs and soft plastics to just over 4lb but the fishing was second place to being out amongst the wildlife and paddling through the kelp

Yet another fun packed day afloat 24/08/2012

Today I had a session on a new mark and met up with Sam a fellow yak fisherman the tactics today were to be lure fishing both hard and soft the action started almost Immediately with a couple of stonking Coalies around the 2lb mark and one going just a touch over at 2lb 2oz a new PB

The next take saw line peeling from the reel and the fish on the end doing a good impression of a Sailfish tail walking and thrashing around on the surface but soon the culprit was at the side of the yak a fine Sea Trout of around 3lb another PB

after that excitement I thought I would head over to where Sam was getting into some nice Pollock and was rewarded with a small specimen on the plug

After quite a few more on the plugs I had some success on the soft plastics

By this time it was time for a leg stretch and a bite to eat so we headed to an exposed rock and discovered we were not alone but had the company of some Common seals that weren’t as shy as I had thought so I took the opportunity to get in the water and take some pics

We headed back out but the wind had picked up a little but the fish were there in numbers and trolling plugs was the most effective way of fishing now with the swell increasing and the hits were coming thick and fast with countless Pollock up to around 4 1/2lb another PB for me being brought aboard but as time was pressing we decided to switch to shallow divers and head in which accounted for a few more belting takes and several more 4lb+ Pollock in shallower water

Unfortunately the troll back to shore was cut short by Sams Yak developing quite a bad leak but a bit of teamwork a bilge pump and calm clear heads made the situation do able and we were soon both safe back ashore after yet another great trip one to remember
