Today I decided to launch at Marske early doors with my mind set on a spot of float fishing to get some bait in the freezer and some light ledgering to see what species were about.
I was soon paddling out into a nice sunrise whilst most people were still fast asleep
Once I was into a depth of around 25ft I anchored up and cast a sliver of mackerel out on a running 2oz bomb and then set to work trotting a light float fished sliver out in the tide,The mackerel were very abundant today with the float barely settling before it either bobbed and slid away or just sailed under as the mackerel tore off with the bait some of the mackerel were of good size today with a couple over 2lb at a guess
I managed to get a video of the mackerel from the bite to landing it not very good footage but some of you may find it enjoyable especially those who used to float fish the piers bring back good memories before the tinsel warriors arrived! (have to excuse the shaky bits and the squeaking of the float stop moving down the line)
After missing a few bites on the bottom rod I decided to wind the float rod in to concentrate on the other rod and after a few more rattles I had a nice (very Red coloured) Grey Gurnard on board
Then the stamp of dab increased with loads around this size
including this very dark old looking specimen
I was getting a bit bored with constant stream of flatties on the ledgered bait so set the float up just over depth and trotted a bait down tide and soon the float slid away and struck into a nice fish that was kicking well but not swimming round in circles like a mackerel and was pleased to see a really nice flounder appear from the depths
A very thick bodied fish that must have been close to 2lb and strangely marked on its underside
Then it was back to the marauding Mackerel
So back out with the bottom fished bait and after a steady stream of yet more flatties I managed 5-6 more grey gurnard
I had a few Guillemots pass by hunting and looked like they were getting a few sandeels so put on a set of tiny sabikis but failed to catch any for livebaiting with so called it a day as it was getting warm now and I was covered in stinking mackerel juice :vomit:
So after a steady paddle back in loaded the yak back on its trolley and cooled and cleaned myself off before the long slog back to the car
Andy
